Skin concern

Tired-Looking Skin

Looking tired usually means several small changes at once. The consultation works out which ones apply to you.

Looking tired is a description, not a diagnosis, and it is rarely one change. Usually it is a surface that reflects less light, skin holding less water than it used to, slightly less support under the cheek and a shadow beneath the eye. Each is small on its own, but together they make a face look exhausted when you do not feel it. Most people notice it first in a photograph taken on a day they felt fine.

What people mean by tired

Slower cell turnover leaves a dull surface that scatters light instead of reflecting it. Dehydration leaves skin flat and finely crinkled by the afternoon. Early laxity shows along the jaw and around the mouth. Volume shifts, so the cheek no longer supports what sits above and below it. Pigment or thin skin under the eye looks like a shadow. Fluid puffs on waking and settles by mid-morning. In the mirror these look like one thing, but they are separate, and the mix differs from face to face. If the surface alone explains it, our page on dull skin covers that. This page covers the combination.

Why identification comes before treatment

These elements respond to different treatments, and some need the opposite approach to others. Skin that is dehydrated will improve for a week after resurfacing and then look flat again, because its water content was never treated. A shadow cast by the shape of the bone beneath the eye will not lighten with brightening skincare. Filling it because it looks hollow is one of the more common ways the under-eye is made to look worse.

What tends to make it worse

Cumulative sun exposure does most of the long-term damage. It affects collagen and pigment at the same time, so sun-damaged skin tends to look dull and shadowed together. Other contributors are broken sleep and shift work, alcohol, smoking, low fluid intake, weight change, the hormonal shift around menopause, and untreated hay fever or nasal congestion, which can noticeably deepen under-eye shadowing. One cause catches people out: a skincare routine doing too much. An acid, a scrub and a retinoid used together disrupt the barrier, and skin that cannot hold water looks tired within a fortnight.

The realistic pathways, and what each is not for

Medical-grade skincare and daily sun protection are the foundation of nearly every plan here, and for some people they are close to the whole plan. They work on cell turnover, barrier quality and pigment over roughly eight to twelve weeks. Resurfacing treatments such as skin peels and microneedling address surface and texture, the part that responds quickly, and do little for hydration or shadow on their own. Injectable hydration, including skin boosters and Profhilo, works on water content, bounce and how skin reflects light, not on shape. It is usually planned as a short course followed by maintenance.

Where the under-eye is the main issue, polynucleotides are sometimes discussed for skin quality. Dermal filler is considered only where there is structural hollowing, and then conservatively, because the area tolerates very little product. Where expression lines contribute, the medicines involved are prescription-only, and in the UK they can only be prescribed after a face-to-face assessment. The route is an anti-wrinkle consultation with our prescriber, not a treatment booked from a list. Beyond a certain degree of laxity, injectables may improve skin quality but will not change the structure, and some of what you see has surgical answers that we do not offer.

What a consultation looks at

Your practitioner will look at your face at rest and in movement. You will be asked about your routine and how often you use actives, how your skin reacted the last time it was treated, and your sleep, medication and general health. You will also be asked what you mean by tired: for one person it is the under-eye, for another the whole surface. Imaging is more useful here than for most concerns, because an AI Skin Analysis separates the surface layer from the sun damage and pigment beneath it. Tired-looking skin is assessed at our Bedhampton clinic near Havant now, and at our Winchester clinic on Jewry Street from 8 December 2026.

Doing three things at once means never knowing which one helped, so you leave with a sequence and a review date. Often the first step is to stop using something already in your routine. A fortnight of doing less is a cheaper test than any treatment.

When it belongs with your GP instead

Persistent tiredness that shows in your face is sometimes a sign of something other than skin. Pallor with fatigue, breathlessness or heavy periods can point to low iron. Dullness with cold intolerance, weight change or thinning hair can point to a thyroid problem. Puffiness around the eyes that is there every morning, is getting worse, or comes with swelling elsewhere needs a medical opinion, not a cosmetic one. Loud snoring with daytime sleepiness is worth raising too, because no skin treatment will help it. A yellow tinge to the skin or the whites of the eyes should be seen by a doctor the same week, as should a drooping eyelid or facial asymmetry that appears by itself.

A note on suitability. The information above is general education, not a diagnosis. The right approach for your skin can only be decided at a consultation, where your practitioner will assess suitability and discuss realistic options. Those may include skincare alone, or no treatment at all.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I look tired when I have actually slept well?

Because most of what looks tired in a face is surface quality and structure, not last night's sleep. A dull, dehydrated surface scatters light however early you went to bed. A shadow under the eye is shaped by the bone and the cheek beneath it. Neither changes much after a good week of sleep. Sleep still matters, but it is not usually what drives the impression.

Is there a single treatment that fixes tired-looking skin?

No. Tiredness in a face is a mix of surface quality, hydration, support and shadow, so a sensible plan is sequenced, usually starting with the steps that carry the least risk and cost. The consultation works out which one or two of these contribute most in your face.

Will treatment get rid of my dark circles?

Sometimes treatment softens them, and often only partly. Which applies depends on the cause. Pigment may respond to skincare and suitable resurfacing over months. Thin, crepey skin may respond to treatments aimed at skin quality. A shadow cast by the shape of the bone beneath the eye is not a skin problem and will not respond to skin treatment. Results vary between individuals, and under the eye a partial improvement is the realistic expectation.

How long before I look less tired?

It depends which element is being treated. Surface dullness can lift within a couple of weeks of a peel or a corrected routine. Injectable hydration typically builds over two to four weeks and looks best after a short course. Anything working on collagen takes months. Your plan is set at consultation with a review date, not a timescale promised in advance.
