What it is
Sculptra is an injectable poly-L-lactic acid treatment. Rather than filling a line or adding volume on the day, it acts as a stimulus: the material is gradually broken down by the body and, as it goes, prompts the skin to lay down its own collagen.
That means it behaves very differently from a filler. You do not walk out looking different. The change builds over months and it is your own tissue doing the work, which is exactly why it suits some people and frustrates others.
What it may help with
- Gradual loss of structure and support, particularly across the cheeks and temples
- Skin that has become thinner and less resilient with age
- Overall firmness and skin quality, assessed across a whole area rather than one line
- People who want change slowly enough that nobody can point to a day it happened
Who it may be suitable for
Adults who understand and actively want a gradual result, and who are willing to commit to a course and to the aftercare massage routine. It suits patience. It does not suit anyone wanting a visible change for an event in a few weeks.
Who it may not be suitable for
Not suitable under 18, in pregnancy or breastfeeding, with active infection or inflammation in the treatment area, with a history of keloid scarring, or where there is a known sensitivity to the product. It is generally avoided in areas of very thin or highly mobile skin. Suitability is assessed at consultation.
What to expect
Consultation and skin analysis first, so the number of vials and the areas treated are decided on the evidence of your face rather than sold as a package.
On the day, the product is reconstituted and injected across the treatment area. Expect some swelling immediately afterwards, which is the fluid rather than the result, and which settles over a few days. You will be shown a massage routine to carry out at home and it genuinely matters that you do it.
Then you wait. Most people are reviewed at around three months, and a course is usually planned across two or three sessions.
Consultation & safety
This is a nurse-prescriber-led clinic. Your medical history, medication and skin history are reviewed before anything is offered, and you will be told honestly if a different treatment, or none at all, would serve you better.
Sculptra is a treatment we will actively talk you out of if your expectations are for something immediate. Managing that expectation properly at consultation is part of doing it safely.
Aftercare
The massage routine you are given is not optional and is usually carried out several times a day for the first few days. Avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, steam and very hot showers for 48 hours, and use daily SPF. Written aftercare and a direct contact route are provided after every appointment, and a review is offered as standard.
Possible side effects & risks
Common and expected: swelling, bruising, tenderness and small lumps at the injection sites in the first days.
Less common but well documented with this class of product: small nodules or papules forming under the skin weeks or months later. These are usually manageable, and the aftercare massage routine is part of reducing that risk, but you should know about it before you consent rather than after. Infection and, rarely, vascular complications are also possible, which is why treatment here is delivered by a registered nurse prescriber with complication protocols and emergency medicines in clinic.
All of this is discussed at consultation so your decision is an informed one. Results vary between individuals and nothing here is guaranteed.
